alternator for lister cs
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:22:23 PM »
At the moment I am using a lister cs 31/2 hp driving a 24 volt lorry alternator to charge my batteries. I also use the hot water from the block and a heat exchanger on the exhaust to heat my domestic hot water tank. My thoughts are to build an alternator on the crank like the one already done. The problem being how to match the windings to the power of the engine. Can any one help

Do you still wish to charge a 24V battery pack?

At what RPM do you prefer to run your Lister?

I just bought a Listeroid and I plan to do the same thing that your looking at.  Is there a stator design/ prebuilt stator for a 24 volt system available?

The one in  Other power.s workshop is based on a  wind turbine design but their engine I believe is 6 hp Please correct me if my info is wrong. I still want to run my engine at 650 rpm because that is the design of the engine and I still need to charge at 24 volt because mi inverter is 24 volt

here is one I did a while back. It works great and is super efficient.

If you want 24v just cut the number of turns on the coils in half and fill in with larger wire (double the size...or close to it). You will lose some efficiency with this, design at 24v because the current goes up and therefore the heat dissipation in the stator. This is one of the main reasons to go with MPPT, or a higher stator voltage for that matter. If you wanted to get fancy, you could copy this design exactly, and just program the MX for 24v output. It would work fine.

At 48v, I can get close to 4000w out of this setup. I dont normally run it that high however.

Well, technically at 100% efficiency 3.5 HP is capable of creating 2.6 Kw. However in the real world, those figures are not obtainable, so you would be best to shoot for around 1.8 Kw max. Trying anything bigger would most likely stall out the Lister.

As for design I'd go for a large circumference alternator because the larger the "circle" the higher speed (fpm) of the magnets passing the coils. I would definitely design it for 3 phase, delta.

The listers seem to be more efficient at a lower rpm than most other diesel engines.

From this you need to determine what voltage you wish for the design to maximize the efficiency, and also remember to figure in how large a battery bank you're charging. You don't want a high rate of charge that will boil your batteries!

i do believe Danb designed his alternator to produce 1000w at the speed he wanted to run because that is what his batteries are happy with the engine is capable of driving more.....

What I was thinking if I built an alternator to powerful for the 31/2 hp I could adjust the air gap so It would reduce its out put which would be a good way to get the maximum power from a given HP and later when I have rebuilt a 6 Hp that I have got it would be used on that one
