Bought some reeeeeely cheap cable
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:21:23 PM »
Hello all

I'm building a lenz type turbine with a motor conversion as generator. The tower is 6m (20') high with a 90mm (3.5") diameter pipe.  I'm pretty close to installing so more on the complete windmill in the near future.

So my tower will need guy wires and I was planning on buying 5mm (close to 1/4") wire. Looked around for prizes and surprised that is was so expensive. Of coarse safety is not the place to save  money, so as I was building up the courage to spend some cash I found an interesting deal on the local e-bay.

This guy was selling a drum of 10mm (3/8). he guesstimated it was 150m (490') (boy was he wrong). I mailed him asking if I could buy 50m (166') , and as a long shot offered 50 euro (70usd) for the lot. To my surprise he replied wanting 60 euro (83usd) for the lot.

It seemed a good deal to me so I drove over their made the sale, drove back. Happy me.

Today I did some measurements for a better guesstimate and it turned out the the total length is more like 900m 3000ft!!. a great deal :) :) :D.

But since I only needed 50m (166') what am I going to do with it all? :~ :~

Since you seem to have caught this incurable "bug" :-)

I would save it for the next 3 - 10 winders you're about to begin building.

OR offer some up for barter with the other's here ?

Have Fun !!

Watch the corrosion - looks to be raw steel wire and will need careful attention especially in storage...
