Motor conversion, many 3-phase's to pick from????

I finally got to see my girlfriends brothers stash of motors today!!!

He has a bunch of 3-phase ones that he said he will never use and I

could play with them !!!!   ~

There was a couple of half HP's, and a one HP with a few 2 HP's.

Now I just need to pick out one to start on ?

I'm thinking that I should be looking for a lower RPM model and maybe

to go ahead and try to get a half HP with a 2 HP also.

Of course I'll have to hook him up with one after I get one done and

prove that I'm not just talking!

Good thing his cabin is just a few hundred yards from her's!

(He does have a much better site for a windmill as far as open area

and no tree's, She of course had to have her's built in the middle of the forest and has many HUGE tree's all around it. But I still like her's much better, lol,   )

Any advice out there on what to look for when picking out some motors?

I'm sure lower RPM's would be good but

also I'm thinking shaft size and frame type might place issues

when looking them over?

I'm not an expurt on conversions.  I do remember from reading you will want as low a speed motor as you will probably find. I think Zubbly said the "2 pole" - 3450 rpm +/- on 60Hz motors were not desirble.  You will want as large a shaft as you can get.

As I remember Zubbly is getting about a kW/HP from his conversions. The curved magnets would need to be near rotor diameter if you chose to use them.

I'll have a try at it. Anyone feel free to shoot me down (I will learn something).

Low RPMs is better, but anything works (at least to some extent, and better than I expect... even mine!).

All "X" HP motors are not created equal. Some have a much higher coil resistance than others.  I would try the low resistance motors of the same HP rating first.  

Then I'd ruin the others in order!  Low resistance motors die first!

No idea if that train of thought is correct.

Bigger is not always better.

You (meaning me) will have trouble with too low of a cut in speed and needing blades too large for what you can use (meaning what I can use here).

Or the power curve is too steep, needing larger blades than you can use (again meaning what I can use here).

You (again, meaning me) will build some alternators twice as good as a stepper motor, and only half as useless.

You (meaning me again) will build some wonderful alternators, quite accidently, that have great potential for wind use (meaning neither you, or I, can use them).

Ain't it great being us?

Just observations I've noted along w/ above recommendations...

Sealed end caps w/ cooling fins - all weather motor makes good all weather generator.

Cast housings w/ beefy mounting bracket built in - stamped brackets spot welded to motor housing require precautions as the steel / welds won't hold up well.

Shaft diameter .625" or greater - and as long as possible, once can always trim but adding to 7/8" stub isn't feasible.

If you only have a minute to choose before the dogs wake up or somesuch, smell check the motor for burnt phenolic smell. Toasted windings trump other quick check guidelines...

Na, the dogs know me and I'll get to pick them over, (after I dig them all out,lol)

maybe, after I get them all out, I'll get them all!!!! (wishful thinking going on)

Two 2 HP's

First one

There was another 2 HP there but was smaller shafted

and being that girlfriends other brother wants to also

follow along and do one himself, I left that one for him

Also a couple 1 HP's and a half HP but left behind for later use maybe

Now just waiting for them to dry out after being filled with engine degreaser

foam then sprayed out at car wash, can see that they might need another wash down.

Just trying to play and have some wind type fun, lol
