Jerry's dual rotor update.
« on: February 03, 2006, 04:23:13 PM »
The alt is all together. I've only done the spin by hand tests. Hope to do a lathe test in a day or 2?

Best I can tell with lazer tack is no load 13 volts at 200 rpm. Heres a couple pix.

More data in a day or 2.

Hi Zubbly.

You know at hart I'm a motor conversion guy. At 500 rpm the Garbogen does 650 watts.

I didn't know what to expect from this littel guy. I based its prefomance on Eds 8" kit.

I think he calls his 8" kit a 500 watt? I think his magnets are about twice the foot print size as mine and .25" thick rather than mine at .20"thick.

I did the latehe test and magnet size seems to be a good indicator of available power. About half the size magnet and half the power.

It also apears this littel alt will be a good 24 volt unit. At 500 rpm the no load voltage is 44v. With a 12 volt battery load it almost stalls the lathe. So I tryed a 24v battery load.

At 500 rpm I see 10 amps at 28 volt = 280 watts. Intresting thing thats what I got out of the 10" Lowes ceramic alt.

I can use a 24v genny so next will be the S-10 truck wind test and then fly it.

Today I cut some 11.75" circles out of 1/2" plexi for a customer. He gave me the plexi discs. He just needed the holes in his material.

So I've started to think about the next dual rotor.

It apears that $50 worth of wedge NEOs makes about 1/3 as much power at $32 worth of curved NEOs in a motor conversion. The dual rotor are also very labor intencive but still alot of fun.

This is just my second dual rotor and I want to build some more. I'm sure each one will get a littel better?

I still want to see 650 watts from a dual rotor alt with 49" blades. That what the Garbogen does at 30 mph with 5 to 6 mph cut in.

I've got some 1.5" X .25" round NEOs I need to use up. gues they'll be on the next alt?

I need to find out if round coils are OK?
