14.5 foot composite plug almost done
« on: January 26, 2007, 06:04:49 PM »
I have been working on a composite blade for some time now, as some of you know, so I figured I would post an update on our progress.  The plug is almost compleated, we have a little work on the root left, and we need to add the last layer(s) of glass to tie it all together.  The plug is constructed of polyurethane foam 6lb/cu. ft. with a few layers of glass and alot of putty (epoxy resin and micro-balloons).   Have been working on this plug on-and-off seince October.

Now that you have doen a lot of fairing... the Gougeon Brother's WEST system 410 Microlight filler is a LOT easier to sand than many fillers.

Nice looking work.

I am not sure exactially what balloons we were using, but most of the goops and fillers he buys are from West Systems.  He actually knows thoes guys, they both race ice boats and share interests with the composites etc.  Yeah, the balloons really do help.  Sanding glass and resin is NOT fun, that has been 95% of the work thus far.  Getting the trailing edge "perfect" <-(I am a realist) was quite the challenge.

By the way, this plug is to make molds for a Vaccum Infusion system.

p.s. does anyone have any ideas of what would be the easiest way to mount heating coils inside of the mold halves (need to get to arround 160F) for the post-cure process?
