question about ghurd charge controller.
« on: August 15, 2010, 12:35:21 AM »
hi friends,i am on the way to build a 12v 8 feet axial wind turbine based on hugh's design. i was planning not to use commercial controllers because they are limited to a certain amps, instead,i wanted to use ghurd's controller.
i was thinking to make the turbine full furl at about 500w for this moment and later wen i will add some more batteries,i will add some load to the tail making it to furl at 1200w
the output of the turbine will be approximately 1200w peak.about 100amps

what do you advise friends?

thanks

My controller will work, but 1200W 100A is a serious system.

Overall, it would be better to use multiple commercial controllers.
They have the added features nice to have in a large system, such as 3 stage charging, automatic equalization, etc.

i know that your controller will do the job well but i want to know the maximum amps or watts you advise for your controller

MorningStar TriStar TS-60 (better)
or
Xantrex C60

I doubt there are many decent controllers listed on ebay.  Most are junk.

Maybe he could look on Amazon, have seen some of those names pop up there but it varies.

ghurd, what if i change the voltage from 12 to 24v and decrease the peak power from 1200 to about 900w?then do you think your controllers will be ok?

this will make about 40 amps

i am building an 8 feet axial, the peak power is 700-800w full furl.

now what do you advise?your controller or commercial one?

With higher voltage, the expense to control the amps is less, because controlling amps is expensive.

A commercial controller still has the added features.
In a small system, they are usually not very important.

In a larger system many other factors should be considered.
Is the system usually operating with a low battery, or floating.
Is the average output 100W or 500W.
Is the operator aware of all the limitations and knowledgeable about battery care.
A good commercial controller makes these things less important, because the controller should be smart enough to recognize and deal with some of the issues, even if the operator is not.

My recommendation for a 800W system would depend on how it is operated, and who is operating it.

ah........ok,the operator is not me,it is for someone who was interested in building a wind turbine and he contacted me.

i thought i could use ghurd controllers for both dump and lvd coz its cheap, easy to configure and works well

anyways,i will try to buy a commercial one.

thanks
