Modern Flettner Wind Turbine
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:54:32 AM »
I didn't know that there was a modern version of the 1926 Flettner wind turbine in use until I discovered this:

It is translated from Polish, so the text isn't too good, but I think it is quite interesting. I can't see the reason for using Flettner's design, now that were have more modern materials to use in blade construction. But there is the matter of controls, and the builders of this turbine make a point of that.

But I still can't find a photo of Flettner's original 1926 turbine, only drawings, which is a shame, as it was probably one of the first utility sized turbines built. There are now plenty of photos of his two rotor ships.

Seems to me . . .

The individually spinning props are creating a gyroscopic force that is resisting the rotating force from the hub spinning.

It looks really cool but I think it may not work and it would be a maintenance nightmare.
