Tilt up tower?
« on: September 24, 2004, 09:21:32 PM »
A rebuilt aermotor tower with some modified legs.  My little green assistant puts it up and down without breaking a sweat.  It takes about an hour to unbolt it, lower it, mount the turbine, and put it back up again.

   Up and running...

   Having fun and almost done...

Ed;

How tall is that tower?

Oh, and in the first picture I see the cooling tower for your nuke plant in the background :=)

Cheers.

nice! Looks like you got yourself a neat little setup there (especially your green helper, that makes things easy!).

Tom, the tower is just a small one, It started out as a 33ft when I took it down.  The bottom legs were pretty tweeked.  I rebuilt it as a 27 ft tower.  It was free with the exception of the labor.

The silo in the background is 80 ft tall with a 30 ft diameter foot print.  It definately blocks any useful north winds from the tiny tower I just put up.  There is another one to the right which is 45 ft and 17ft in dia.   Still working on some VAWT ideas for the little one.

Have Fun

Ed, Can you use your silo as a wind gen tower?  80' would be sweet.

I've thought about it, but haven't figured out how to get up there.  The dome would have to be removed as well as some of the equipment inside.  The cost to build a platform would be extreemly high.  It would be much cheaper to take it down and replace it with a standard wind tower of the same height.

Fun thinking about it though...

The silo in the background is 80 ft tall with a 30 ft diameter foot print.

How do you get the grain into it - does it use an auger or some type of elevator?

Around here (SE Australia) most farm silos are substantially smaller (usually about 30' tall by 15' diameter) and made from steel.

Here's some pictures:

For wheat or corn?  Sorry, I know this is off-topic but it's of interest to me.  For some reason. ;-)

These older types of silos were mainly used for forage silage.    Which is similar to a corn stalk chopped then put in the silo.
