Wire to 1000 Watt Wind Turbine to Battery Bank

Hi, I have a 1000 watt generator. It is rated for :

130. Volts DC
     
     
8. Amps
   
   
5000. RPM'S
      
      
      

The Distance from my battery bank to the turbine is 85 Feet. So would that mean 170 feet for both wires?


Problem I have is a calculator online tells me to use #4 AWG, but I was hoping I could maybe have a couple runs of some less expensive AWG.

I'm new at this and any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a treadmill motor and won't see anything over 100  watts max into a 12 volt battery and will probably need to settle for charging a 60 volt battery and one at a time . So put your gen set as close to the batts as possible .

Charge the 6 volt batteries  in parallel and use as 12 volt with transfer switch If you need a diagram I'll post one . The treadmill motor is dc and looses a power with long runs . Get the unit up and working you'll see the problem.

Will I have to use 4 AWG Wire? It would be nice to run a couple of smaller wire lengths.

8 amps and 170 feet is 3.4 volts loss.

I have a 38 volt motor rated at 12 amps and all I ever see is little more than 2 amps. I use a 100 ft 12 gage extension cord from the hardware store. They are fun for learning but not much for charging. I call my the battery maintainer not charger. I have had mine up for about a year. When the wind is blowing I still have to check to see how much it's puting out. I plan to put up another one soon. I love mine.

85 feet is not going to get you much power and so  a closer install is a  must but you have to  have good wind though so best guess there . getit up and post back with the max voltage and amperage through a 6 volt batt.I'll post a diagram latter.

May be a bit cheaper to run 2 pieces of 10-2 UF, giving the same result as #7.

A 250' spool would have wire left over.

Don't use solid wire down the tower.

Thanks for all the comments.... I'm still learning this , would be nice to have it up and running tho. For now all I have are a couple car batteries...... Any idea which would be the best wiring method?

Have ever given any thought to setting up your dump load to  charging 6 and dumping to 6 with the dumper in the common .

You lost me with "the dumper in the common".

I do not like attempting to match the exact charging amps with the exact dumping amps.

No need for it to match as far as I can tell.

My simple circuit can keep the voltage with in 0.04V anyway, and I was told that is not as good as 0.1V or higher for flooded cells.

The thing works faster than people expect.

The generator is a low % of the cost.

I would aim for a lower output of the "1000W" item you have (like 100W),

but try to get it at 12V.

If it can not operate at the system voltage, what's the point?

Can't split car batteries into 6V banks anyway.

It looks like he took some 2.5HP surpluscenter treadmill motors and put a hub on them.

They will make ac when you spin them. You would do better to take ac from it and rectify it near your batteries. You may have to move the blocking diode, depending on where it is.

100 watts is all you will likely get. A 100-foot 12-gauge extension cord should work fine.

Hi, I've have been reading and learning as much as possible in this forum and I've gotta ask; Why not use soild wire ie;10/2(3-phase)inside the pole and why you can't let it twist?

 Also while I'm here whats the deal on "furling" . I can't seem to find much on the subject. Thanks

Solid wire can not take the flexing and will break.

May have a problem getting it without kinks, and the kinks would rub the pole until the insulation failed.

Furling is how a windmill "folds itself" in high winds.  It takes the blades sideways to the wind to protect itself from too much current or too many RPMs.

Easier to see than explain.
