Homemade wind turbine 2KW
« on: October 09, 2010, 03:32:05 AM »
Hello, I'm new to the forum. Since so many people in recent years are passionate about alternative energy, especially wind energy prodatta. For all these people who want to try their hand at building small homemade wind turbines, helping to dispel all the many uncertainties and many doubts, I suggest that my speech to share with you my experience so that it can be useful to all.
I built a horizontal axis wind turbine with 2 ml kWp. 3.80 in diameter with neodymium magnets alternator 30x50 16 +16 N Grade 42 and 12 coils of 75 turns with wire Ø 1.80 mm. The stator is star connected and the system is 48 Volt
Here are the photos:

THE BLADES

Metal frame

The stator

Rotors

The alternator assembly

The electrical collector

The blades eqilibratura

In final position

A first taste of 1 KW

In Annex I attach my whole project with Autocad at this link: http://energiaalternativa.forumcommunity.net/?act=Attach&type=post&id=280224661

At this link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAOY6DS6luk you will find a precent my realization.

Forgive my bad English, I write from Italy with the help do google translator.

Un Saluto a tutti :)

A superb job done there, well done.
I like the magnet retaining method, it should allow some cooling of the stator.
Is that a plant pot as the nose cone?  :D

One of the best DIY machines I've seen for a long time.

"IPSA SCIENTIA POTESTAS EST": indeed.  Not to mention some machining skills (which I sadly lack).

Both your English and your craftsmanship are enviable.

A real professional and fantastic build. Sliprings are cool. What kind of dump load controller and MPPT if any - have you set up?
The video on utube is super.

(The dragon (is that correct?) in your signature and on the machine tail - sounded like you are from china /of chinese origin.)

Spitfire,
Welcome to the forum!
English isn't a problem at all - especially when the pictures show excellent handiwork.
Thank you for posting and we all look forward to knowing more about your progress.

Hi, thank you all for the compliments, you have encouraged me to do even better.

hello gotwind2
Yes, I made the nose with a flower vase  ;D

hello  prasadbodas2000
The charge controller I bought from you in America, is the Tristar TS60 Mornistar.
Since I was small that the figure of the dragon has always tickled my fancy. So I'm not Chinese but true Italian. :)

In short, I will publish a movie on youtube to demonstrate the efficiency

@ spitfire... Good work . I liked the way you build it, very clear . It looks you are very profesional ..
I have some questions becouse you didnt put to many details.
- what size where the magnets ?
- what size here the conection roods .. like the diameter..
- and  at how much rpm or wind speed you got 48v/30A like in the picture. .

Multo Bene ..
   Ciao ..

Hello

Where I can buy panel meters like those you use on your wind turbine?

Those are DIN style panel meters and are common in Europe. I assume they are available in N.America.

Unless we know where you are it is not much use offering suppliers although Farnell and RS stock them in UK and I believe they have outlets in N.America.

This may be a convenient place to congratulate Spitfire on the excellent workmanship and presentation.

Beautiful workmanship and turbine.  I did note that it appears that you did not cover the plated neodymium magnets in your build.  From my experience the plating is not perfectly water proof and with suficient moisture, the magnets will begin to rust, causing the plating to bulge and then flake off as the sintered material underneath oxydizes.  I have been to the southern portions of your country, but never in the north where it appears that you are at.  Thank you for posting your turbine.

Google's Italian translation:
Bella lavorazione e turbina.

Nice work.

One point:  I expect the copper brushes working against the copper slip-rings to eventually weld and tear.  I'd replace the brushes with something made of graphite.  You should be able to find quite an assortment of materials in any shop that handles large DC motors.

Hello, the magnets are mm. 30x50x10 N42 magnetization.
But I'm not 30 A 20A, that power was reached at about 150 rpm.
The other question I could not understand it, sorry.

Richhagen Hello, thank you for the compliments and the suggestion for the magnets.
I can tell you however, that the magnets were treated with a thin layer of epoxy trasparente.La my area where I live is in southern Italy, though it seems, I am in the province of Avellino, one hour from Naples.
A cordial greeting

Hello Ungrounded Lightning Rod, As for brushes, but do not appear, but are real and his own brushes for Bosch starters, maybe the picture a bit blurry and the color you have but deceived
I put the photo of the original brush before the change:

Now that you've shown me the brushes I can make them out in the original photo.  Looks good.

That's one fine machine.

Hi again Spitfire,

Now I see you are in Italy.  Do you know Antonio Cecere?  He has taught wind turbine construction workshops in Rome, like Hugh Piggott does.

http://www.webalice.it/acecere48/index.htm

I have corresponded with Antonio, from time to time over the years.
If you have never met him, I bet that he would be very interested in your project!

Ciao

Hello SparWeb, I have been in contact via the web with Antonio Cecere. He has translated from English into Italian on the last hand of Hugh Piggott. The same Mr. Cecere gave me some advice on the implementation of my wind turbine.

Hi artv, I used the slip rings and brushes , because in my case, it is the twisted cord.

Hi willib I used cedar wood matured, I think is the best.

Bravo!

And rightly so!

Very nice example of what can be accomplished in home wind power.

Thanks for the share.

Hi,
I'm doing in my free time generator, what kind of steel is good for base for neodimium magnets i used (pl noumber) - 1,4301 and it dosn't hold it at all.
Looking forward to recive any message.
What sort of resin did you use to make stator? and did you painted it red or is it orginal resin color?

All the best
Thanks

Hi
The rotor discs are of normal iron. The two-component epoxy resin, red. Is used to make flooring.
