Windmill uses compressed air
« on: March 28, 2006, 07:32:00 AM »
Has anyone thought about using compressed air as energy storage for a windmill? It will eliminate expensive batteries, dramatically increase storage capacit, & eliminate expensive regulating devices controlling output on the generator at varying wind speeds. It is all simpler.

Before the avalanche of comments falls upon you, I will tell you that I too thought of this and went so far as to write to the BWEA to tell them of my idea, I then read a thirty year old book on wind energy and saw it in the chapter of energy storage. Germany has been doing if for years and there is at least one CAES site in the U.S.A..

Compressed Air Energy Storage has some very fundamental problems, as Negre has found out with his compressed air powered car; but that doesn't mean it is of no use at all.

It isn't efficient with today's tech but times may be changing.

It is horribly inefficient. 7% comes to mind for the compression part of it.

But I still believe if there is a use for the air, it can be a great dump load.  Gotta be better than light bulbs.

I still have not come upon a decent and small unit for our needs.

This has been done by people

on this forum.

(Do a search)

I am still looking for a small compresser

I'd like to put up a small one to fill a couple

propane bottles. I'm allways hauling computers

off to places with air to blow them out.

I've even told all my body shop type friends

about this and how it would keep thier air compresser

motors running less.

None have tried it yet, but one very good friend

had a dead motor in a small enough one so we took

the motor off and he is looking for a shaft to mount

a prop on for it.
