Analog meters
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:45:18 PM »
I've been looking for some analog meters for my two systems for quite a while.

Since there are two systems to outfit and my philosophy is ' if it's free energy lets try to get it free ' (or as cheaply as possible) I do a lot of scrounging around.

I went to a HAM festival / swap meet over the weekend and one fellow had a $3 bin full of old meters.

Top left was $1 and it takes a 2k2 resistor for 15V full deflection - perfect!

Middle top was $2 and all it took was a bit of silicon to glue the glass back in.

The rest were $3 apiece.

Two Tripletts, one Westinghouse, one Barnett and two No names.

I'm so happy!

Hey Old F,

Are you the same Old F that is on the Yesterdays Tractor forum?

I've been meaning to ask you for quite some time but didn't want to hijack someones thread.

A few years ago I knocked together a little program that will print up customised dial cards for these meters.  It's available in my files section here:

It's written in Visual Basic 6, and if you want to fool around with it here's the source:

Please.

Dayton.  Where and when?

I have like 20 pounds of tubes nearly ready for the dumpster.

For 'geeks', they sure can't make their fests easy to find on the net.

Hey,

Not a ham but have a Allis B model, and early crank only type. Runs great.

Sorry for the post hijack.

Thanks BT!

I remember someone had done this a while back, just not who.

When I get a chance I'll try it out.

Thanks again

That's some nice neat work, I'd say that it's YOU who did good! ;-)

Somebody asked me a while back about adding a feature to it so that you could manually set up a logarithmic meter by specifying individual tick marks and numbers, but I never got around to it.  Oops.

Here's another example of BT's program at work.

This was the bottom right meter(Weston)from a VOM. I found through trial and error a 17k5 resistor gave me 22 volts full deflection.

This Triplett was a 1 Amp meter so I cut the internal shunt and added an external one using 18 inches of 14 AWG solid core wire. Started with 24 inches and kept cutting off pieces until the amps matched my fluke meter at 4 Amps. Then I just used white out correction fluid to make the dots disappear and added a zero to the end 1 digit.
