From Wind Genny to useable Auxiliary Power
« on: March 06, 2005, 05:23:40 AM »
Ran #4AWG DC Power and #6AWG solid copper ground thru 3/4" conduit into the house.

Once inside, I mounted the DC Panel, AC Panel & 1250/ 3100 Watt Aims Inverter.

Here's my wind genny takin' off in a slight breeze.

It's a single phase w/starter windings conversion, using 4 groups of 7ea - 1/2"x1/2" cylindrical Neo's epoxied to a squared off rotor.

Those are 5' diameter PVC blades which work surprisingly well in low winds.

As you can see, it's self-furling with an offset vertical axis and the tail will furl parallel with the blades in an extreme wind condition. The tail is skewed off to account for the offset axis. Keeps the blades pointed right into the wind.

Here you can see just how skewed the tail really is (quite a bit, but it really works great like that)

At the base of the 21', 2 1/2" pipe tilt-up pole (no guys) is my bank of 3ea - Group 27 batteries.

Here are the rectifiers for the wind genny and my charge controller for my 2 small solar panels.

DC Power & Ground thru the 3/4" conduit.

Conduit ready to put thru wall.

Once thru the wall it's ready for my DC Panel.

The DC Panel, Inverter & 2-breaker AC Panel below.

Gotta keep things grounded!

The AC Main Disconnect is just a plug into the inverter.

Testing things out ... It Works!

Here it is all wrapped up (with the exception of the house wiring).

I'll run that down some conduit, under the house and up to the recepticals (which will be marked as "Auxiliary Power".

Whew! Think I'll go have a beer now, I think I deserve it!

Tomorrow, bring in the firewood, take the dogs out for a bit and maybe, just maybe get the 14GA wire in, recepticles in and everyting tested.

Wish me luck!

Can you set your camera to take smaller pictures, 640x480 VGA would be great. I have a high speed connection that is choking on those monster pictures. I'm sure that every digital camera has the 640 x 480 setting. I have written this entire comment and the pictures are still loading . . .

np, I'll just redo them tomorrow, I can resize them in Infranview pretty easy.

I don't know quite what I was thinking (or not thinking)... must be tired from the work I did today.

Thanks for letting me know Woof.

Hope the photos download easier now, I changed them all to 640x480's.

Very nice, how much would you say this set-up cost you??  Also, what is the purpose of the multimeter in the DC panel?

Hi Lexx,

I'm afraid to total it all up, but I'd guess that I've got around $200 into the genny, $175 into batteries, $130 into the inverter, $150 into solar panels, $250 into misc. ... looks like more than $500 and hopefully less than $1000.

The multi-meter is just there so I can keep an eye on the DC voltage. If I see it at 11V or less, I'll shut it down. Don't want my batts to cycle more than 50%.

You should be proud to have built it for under 1000, how much would it have cost you if you had bought all of the components??

I think your resolution changed maybe but not the file size??

I am on dial up here, I have read the hole post here and am posting this and still only have 1 1/2 images showing right now.

Very nice what I can see so far, but not much yet. Finnally got 3 pics loaded after going to get coffee :(

File size is now down to about 50k each.

Should work better now.

I got to see tham all now :)

Nice work! Looks pretty good to me. Nice clean neat job.

I am somewhat sloppy here, I just connect a wire and toss it in the right direction and hope it works. Actaully most everything I do is temporary and not so neat, I keep changing stuff around.

How do you like your Aims inverter, have you used it enough to tell yet? I have a 5,000watt 10,000 surge Aims and like mine alot. I am wanting to buy a couple more inverters before long, probably around 1,000watt or 2,000 watt each for mobile use and mount my big one permanantly at home. Most likely will buy another Aims myself.

Hi NTL,

The Aims Inverter is Sweet, I like it. No problems what-so-ever with it.

It supplies two in-house (off-grid) circuits (4 recepticals) nicely.

The genny has some broken blades now (soon to be replaced).

Guess I'd better get my tail in gear ...
